March 2008 Board Meeting | Summary Statement
At its annual retreat March 6-9, the Board of Trustees met with the president, officers, and deans to discuss long-term programmatic and financial planning for the University, and to identify significant strategic opportunities and challenges that will require sustained attention. Following the retreat, President Robert Zimmer sent a letter to the University community summarizing the discussion and the opportunities ahead.
The Board also approved a 4.9 percent tuition increase for students entering the College in Fall 2008. (See the news release for more information.)
December 2007 Board Meeting | Summary Statement
The University of Chicago Board of Trustees held its regular quarterly meeting December 5-6, 2007 at the University’s Gleacher Center in downtown Chicago.
Board members reviewed the University’s safety efforts and emergency communications following the set of assaults on November 19 that resulted in the shooting death of graduate student Amadou Cisse. Discussion focused on actions being taken to improve the safety and security of the campus and surrounding areas, as well as the development of clear guidelines for how communications will be issued in the event of serious crimes and emergencies.
The Board approved the opening of a new charter middle school in North Kenwood/Oakland. The middle school, which is scheduled to open in Fall 2008, will serve grades six to eight in a portion of the Chicago Public Schools facility at 4414 S. Evans Avenue. The new school will be named for one of the University’s first African American graduates, Carter G. Woodson. (See the news release for more information.)
The Board discussed the historically-strong connections between the social sciences division, the Graduate School of Business, and the Law School, and was apprised of discussions taking place on campus related to opportunities in these areas. The Trustees were also apprised of the University’s programming and plans for the creative and performing arts.
In committee meetings, the Board also discussed long-term financial investments in University programs, long-range campus planning to meet the University’s facilities and infrastructure needs, and housing needs for students. In addition, members of the Board heard a presentation from Dean John Boyer about strategic priorities for the College, and were introduced to a new University website design that will be launched later this winter.
Finally, members of the Board adopted a resolution honoring Henry S. Webber, vice president for community and government affairs, who is leaving the University in February 2008 to become executive vice chancellor for administration at Washington University in St. Louis.

Trustee Emeritus Robert O. Anderson passed away on Sunday, December 2, at age 90. He had served as a member of the Board of Trustees since 1963.
